Wow its great to be here, and especially have Dr John on board. I have been
reading a lot of his work and have also listened to his lectures on another website. Definitely worth the 20 bucks. My question is why Dr John recommends the gels as the best way to start TRT when nearly everything I read from other members on other boards seem to much prefer shots. Am I missing something here?

thanks

Speculation here...

1) Gels have a slower absorption rate, thus limiting the negative sides of TRT - namely E2 production.

2) Gels can be applied by anyone - even subcutaneous injections can be a problem for some people.

Not at all I would have stayed with Gels if I did not have 1 year old girl at home, I was worried about the transfer to her

i think people with adrenal/hyroid issues feel better on the shots because of the absoprtion problem with gels due to what the build up of fluid underneath the skin.

AS phil nicely put in a thread
When a person has had hypothyroidism for a long time, absorption of transdermal testosterone may be difficult. This is because there is a build-up of mucin (a glue-like substance) in the skin of people with hypothyroidism, which causes the skin to become thick. This is called myxedema. It can be subtle, not obvious to most physicians, who are not use to pinching the skin of their patients to gauge the thickness of the skin. Myxedema impairs absorption of transdermal testosterone - impairing treatment with transdermal testosterone.

When myxedema is present, it is better to go to testosterone injections for TRT.

I think a lot of Drs would agree that the gels are less intrusive than shots. I am pretty sure that the gels are a bio-identical form of T also, while the shots are a synthetic form. Also, i think gels are supposed to be better at treating ED by raising DHT more than shots do. Someone pls correct me if this is incorrect.

if gels work they are preferred simply because EVERY needle
has a risk of infection or other damage!

any shot of testosterone uses oils to slow absorption and
that is a foreign substance in your muscles ...

also, each shot has the potential of a spike ... with gels,
you only have a specific amount every day and that
measured dose is much more exact than a shot and
varying absorbtion rate from the muscle.

gels do present the risk of transference but if applied properly
and then covered by a shirt the risk is minimal.
