Not time to raise an alarm yet but it would be irresponsible not to pay close attention to the current situation.

Things like this usually peak my interest when there are 10,000 -> 100,000 killed.
This one's bad. But, I think I will just avoid crowded areas for the time being, before considering it highly.

Seems to me this is likely the "emergency du jour". Our society has become so risk averse and so "wussified", for lack of a better word, that we freak out over relatively minor matters. The number afflicted as a percentage of total population is exceedingly minimal.
People always worry about "saving the planet". Don't bother. The planet will do just fine over time. It's us that we need to worry about. We're headed for potentially major problems of our own making---over population, disease, famine, reproductive issues and more. Ever wonder why so many people are struggling with health issues like us here & auto immune problems, which have exploded as of late. The planet will do just fine-right after it kicks us off or we do it to ourselves!

The U.S. declares a public health emergency as tests confirm that eight students at a private New York City school contracted swine flu. Some students had recently gone to Mexico, where 86 people have been killed by the virus. Health officials say there are 20 cases in five states -- and they expect more.

Eight colledge students at a private New York City school contracted swine flu after a trip to Cancun for spring break.
MEXICO CITY (April 26) - Churches stood empty Sunday in predominantly Roman Catholic Mexico City after services were canceled, and health workers screened airports and bus stations for people sickened by a new strain of swine flu that experts fear could become a global epidemic.
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said two more people died of swine flu overnight in the overcrowded capital, and three other deaths are suspected to have been caused by the strain. Another 73 more people were hospitalized with influenza, possibly swine flu.
President Felipe Calderon has assumed new powers to isolate people infected with the deadly swine flu strain that health officials say has killed up to 86 people and likely sickened about 1,400 in the country since April 13.
Six million masks have been handed out by soldiers,The flu has spread far beyond Mexico's borders with 20 confirmed cases in five U.S. states and suspected cases as far away as New Zealand, Canada and France. There was a time, that based on reported cases and deaths in mexico, the mortality rate was 7%. (Probably due to serious under-reporting of cases, but that is far from definite - there seems to be different strains at work here too)
The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 had a 2.5% mortality rate... And killed 50 million people.
In my opinion this is indeed something to be very concerned about.

I dont know, Its all usually fear driven hype. Remember some of the past flu bugs? Maybe we'll get A/Hong Kong or B/Moscow or A/Tokyo or the dreaded B/Berlin? Damn communist bugs! Their the worst ones!
Fear is very useful in our country...
They have shut down a school in Chicago today due to swine flu.
I would rather have the fear hyped and people be overly sensitive. It is better than poor communication and having everyone sharing the bug like crazy.
Not talking about it is the surest way to make sure that we are screwed in the event that it does truly become a pandemic.

Update on the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Virus
We are all concerned by recent developments regarding the H1N1 virus, commonly known as the swine flu, and particularly the sad news that the first casualty in the United States was a 23-month-old toddler from Mexico who had travelled to Texas with family.
I have talked with Texas Health Commissioner David Lakey, as well as Governor Rick Perry, who informed me that several local school districts along the border and near San Antonio have made the decision to proactively close several schools as a precautionary measure. As of right now, there are just three known severe cases of the H1N1 virus in the state of Texas.

Statement by World Health Organization Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan
29 April 2009
Swine influenza
Ladies and gentlemen,
Based on assessment of all available information, and following several expert consultations, I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5. ( the highest level)
Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world.
On the positive side, the world is better prepared for an influenza pandemic than at any time in history.
Let me remind you. New diseases are, by definition, poorly understood. Influenza viruses are notorious for their rapid mutation and unpredictable behaviour.
WHO will be tracking the pandemic at the epidemiological, clinical, and virological levels.
All countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Countries should remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia.
This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharmaceutical industry and the business community that certain actions should now be undertaken with increased urgency, and at an accelerated pace.
I have reached out to donor countries, to UNITAID, to the GAVI Alliance, the World Bank and others to mobilize resources.
I have reached out to companies manufacturing antiviral drugs to assess capacity and all options for ramping up production.
I have also reached out to influenza vaccine manufacturers that can contribute to the production of a pandemic vaccine.
The biggest question, right now, is this: how severe will the pandemic be, especially now at the start?
It is possible that the full clinical spectrum of this disease goes from mild illness to severe disease. We need to continue to monitor the evolution of the situation to get the specific information and data we need to answer this question.
From past experience, we also know that influenza may cause mild disease in affluent countries, but more severe disease, with higher mortality, in developing countries.
Above all, this is an opportunity for global solidarity as we look for responses and solutions that benefit all countries, all of humanity. After all, it really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.
As I have said, we do not have all the answers right now, but we will get them.
Thank you.

Swine influenza - update 5
29 April 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 18:00 GMT, 29 April 2009, nine countries have officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. The United States Government has reported 91 laboratory confirmed human cases, with one death.
The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (13), Germany (3), Israel (2), New Zealand (3), Spain (4) and the United Kingdom (5).
Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

Eugenics, a very bad and dangerous theory. Inhumane even. Inhuman even.
It might well be that man's good intents are interfering with nature, who will yet prevail in the end. We consistently encourage the genetically weakest of us to breed, which I fear may have rather severe long term consequences.
We like to think we're better than or different from the rest of nature. We're not. To the earth & nature we're just another organism that will survive only if can adapt an overcome. Our technology is no panacea.
People like to say "save the planet". Don't bother. The planet will do just fine. It's us that is at risk.

Read Michael Pollans book "Eat food, not to much, mostly plants"
He speaks at lengths about exactly what is happening now, and predicted these sort of things will be a mainstay in the future, until we clean up our food supply, how we handle and treat animals, and the facilities in which we use.

Saw on the news last night that approx 240 schools closed nation wide.
I RECEIVED THIS ARTICLE FROM A FRIEND (this article was sent to the president of MSU...)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues,
Ordinarily I am not an alarmist, and I don’t believe I am one now – but I feel strongly that forewarned is forearmed, especially now. In the past few days I have received information from several sources inside and outside of the NIH and CDC. Information not shared with the public or press and I have struggled with the ethics involved with holding this information privately. I have decided you have a right to know and so therefore I am sending it on. If you choose to share it with others you know and love, feel free to do so. All I ask is that you remove my name and contact info from this document as your source, as I do not want press or people I don’t know contacting me. So here goes:
I don’t know the reason this information is being kept from the public, I have a theory but won’t go into it now. Suffice it to say the CDC and HHS and this administration are using seriously flawed decision making IMHO:
1. The virus is infectious for about 2 days prior to symptom onset but sheds AT LEAST 7 – 9 days after symptoms have started. Most viruses shed only a few days after symptoms so even the 7-9 days is an educated guess as we have never dealt with anything like this before. So doing the math – exposure can be realized as long as 9-11 days. Hence why schools are closing for such long periods.
2. Since it is such a novel (new) virus, there is no "herd immunity," so the "attack rate" is very high. This is the percentage of people who come down with a virus if exposed. Almost everyone who is exposed to this virus will become infected, though not all will be symptomatic. That is much higher than seasonal flu, which averages 10-15%. The "clinical attack rate" may be around 40-50%. (Remember we are guessing) This is the number of people who show symptoms. This is a huge number. It is hard to convey the seriousness of this.
3. Don’t be fooled into believing the news reports and some voices from the so called “experts” as they calmly tell you we aren’t seeing the intensity of the virus here. You should know the virulence (deadliness) of this virus is as bad here as in Mexico. The most significant difference is that we are blessed with a much better delivery of care in the U.S., specifically easy access to ventilators. Believe me when I tell you there are plenty of folks on ventilators here in the US, right now. The 23 month old here in Houston was on a ventilator for quite sometime before succumbing to this flu, yet we didn’t hear about him until he died. As I send this out a pregnant woman just south of San Antonio is fighting for her life. In Mexico, she might have died already, but here in the US, folks are getting Tamiflu or Relenza quickly, and we have ready access to ventilators. What this means is that within a couple of weeks, regional hospitals will likely become overwhelmed.
4. We know that some positive cases have had more than 50-70 contacts before diagnosis.
5. There are 10-25 times more actual cases (not "possible" cases -- actual), than what is being reported in the media. The way they fudge on reporting this is that it takes 3 days to get the confirmatory nod from the CDC on a given viral culture, but based on epidemiological grounds, we know that there are more than 10 cases for each "confirmed" case right now. And other estimates put it as high as 100 cases for each “confirmed”.
6. Over the next few days we will most likely cross the threshold for the definition of a WHO, Phase 6 global pandemic. This has not happened in any of our lifetimes so far. We are in uncharted territory.
7. We should expect President Obama will declare an emergency sometime in the next 72-96 hours. This may not happen, but if it doesn't, I will be surprised. When this happens, all public gathering will be cancelled for 10 days. At this moment, it would certainly be prudent to consider avoiding public places whenever possible. But I do not suggest forgoing your favorite restaurant. Get your food from “take out” and go home and eat from your own plates, your own flatware, glasses, etc. Try not to sit in a crowded clinic or doctors office, call and see what the wait is, wait outside, or ask the Dr. to call in prescriptions for you.
Outdoor activities are not as likely to lead to infection. It is contained areas and close contact that are the biggest risk.
You should avoid going to the ER if you think you have been exposed or are symptomatic. ER's south of here are becoming overwhelmed -- and I mean that -- already. It is coming in waves, but the waves are getting bigger.
8. Tamiflu is running out. There is a national stockpile, but it will have to be carefully managed, as it is not enough to treat the likely number of infections when this is full-blown. Remember that the government is in charge of the stockpile so that in and of itself could spell disaster when called upon to manage the whereabouts of medicine (can’t keep track of foreign nationals) Not sure about the supply of Relenza, as I do not know those numbers. If I had to choose, I would take Relenza, as I think it gets more drug to the affected tissue than Tamiflu.
9. It appears that this flu produces a distinctive "hoarseness" in many victims. The symptoms, in general, match other flu's; namely, sore throat, body aches, headache, cough, and fever, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration. Some have all these symptoms, while others may have only one or two.
10. Main line of defense: WASH YOUR HANDS. Keep the number 10 in your head and as you lay down to sleep at night, know you have washed your hands with soap and water at least 10 times that day. Hand Sanitizers are a barrier, but good handwashing using soap, washing for 30 seconds, between fingers and under nails is the very best defense. As a matter of fact – cut your nails down, take off acrylics and keep nail beds clean.
Avoid flying or traveling if you can, but if you must, get your hand on a good mask and wear it in the airplane. Your exposure in a closed ventilation system is so much higher and the mask will create a barrier, not completely, but it would be prudent.
11. Drug Therapy recommendations I mentioned above. But there are some really good Herbal Therapies you are not hearing about from the media and here they are:
Preventative Efforts include taking - Immunity Take Care, a lozenge taken one a day and if you get any symptoms, double up. This is a very new supplement that has had positive results with H1N1 (Swine Flu). The most important part of the story with this supplement is that it stops the virus from replicating!
N-Acetyl-Cysteine -- a nutritional supplement available at most health food store, has been shown to prevent or lessen the severity of influenza. Suggested dosing is 1200mg, twice a day for adults, and 600mg twice a day in kids over 12. It would be hard to get kids under 12 to take it, but you could try opening the capsules and putting it on yogurt. For 40 pounds and up, 300-600 mg twice a day, for less than 40 pounds, half that.
Of course Vitamin C taken through foods ingested is best (OJ, Pomegranite Juice, Blueberries, fruits, etc), but pill supplement is better than nothing. Vitamin D is also critical because it helps with absorption and enhances the nature of the drugs and herbs.
First Sign of Symptoms - Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy (another herbal treatment), has been vindicated as quite effective in a large clinical trial in Europe, with an H1N1 variant.
I will do my best to tell you any other information I get, but my source at the CDC will be upset with this e-mail and might shut me out. In the meantime, no need to panic, no need to be overly fearful – just be smart and prudent in your lifestyle choices for awhile. Avoid big public gatherings, I probably will watch Mass on Sundays at home for a few weeks, WASH HANDS often, avoid infected people if possible, DON’T visit people in the hospital (they will understand), Grocery shop when parking lots aren’t full, etc. You get the picture. Perhaps most importantly, don’t go to work when you don’t feel well, don’t expose your worksite to danger. The fewer people infected the easier it will be for our public officials to manage it.

On May 3, CDC is scheduled to complete deployment of 25 percent of the supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to all states in the continental United States. These supplies and medicines will help states and U.S. territories respond to the outbreak. In addition, the Federal Government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against the novel H1N1 flu virus.
Response actions are aggressive, but they may vary across states and communities depending on local circumstances. Communities, businesses, places of worship, schools and individuals can all take action to slow the spread of this outbreak. People who are sick are urged to stay home from work or school and to avoid contact with others, except to seek medical care. This action can avoid spreading illness further.

it seems to be dieing down...
Looks like another manufactured emergency to grab power, spend money and take your mind off the economy.
I'm not saying that swine flu isn't real, but after only a few cases the media was on top of this thing 24/7, the president is talking about spending millions to fight it and it sure takes everyone's minds off the fact that the economy is in the toilet and seems sure to stay there.
If the government is really worried about swine flu, and it's primarily from Mexico then WHY is the Southern border of the US still WIDE OPEN?

exactly when hasn't it been wide open??
Swine flu at its worst is deadly and potentially deadly to 100 of thousands of people. It looks like we lucked out on this one (so far).
The very idea that swine flu was created to hide our serious economic woes is simply incorrect.
The CDC prepares annually for s serious pandemic; I think we all agree that we want to be prepared. Politics aside (I actally hate political discussions on this forum), our government simply HAS TO BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST.

Difference between being prepared and scaring the population into unfounded fear frenzy.
Next time the Government cries wolf most people will remember this and other overblown issues. The people won't react to the warning and the wolf will eat them.

While it is beginning to look as though we dodged the bullet this time, Drs and men of science have been saying for years that a global pandemic is inevitable.
Let them cry wolf. I would rather they be wrong than not show due diligence.
While we in the US may have a great advantage in fighting this strain; were it to be loosed in some of the African or under developed Asian nations there would be no stopping it there.

Read Michael Pollans book "Eat food, not to much, mostly plants"
He speaks at lengths about exactly what is happening now, and predicted these sort of things will be a mainstay in the future, until we clean up our food supply, how we handle and treat animals, and the facilities in which we use.

Sept. 4) - More than 2,000 students at Washington State University have come down with swine flu symptoms in just the first week of classes, school officials said Friday.
Classes at the Pullman, Wash., campus began little over a week ago, demonstrating how quickly the H1N1 virus can spread.
As yet, no classes or university functions have been canceled, including this weekend's football game against conference rival Stanford. Hand-washing stations will be set up at stadium concession stands, and fliers have been posted discouraging anyone who is sick from attending the game.
Though the virus has been widespread, no one at the university has been hospitalized in this latest outbreak. "It seems to last for three to five days," Tinney said.
A presidential panel estimates that upward of half of the U.S. population could come down with the H1N1 this year.

It is no worse than the standard flu. The standard flu virus can also kill the sick and elderly (typically from complications).
Virus du jour.

THE VEGETARIAN MYTH: FOOD, JUSTICE, AND SUSTAINABILITY
Literary Nonfiction. Environment. Politics. We've been told that a vegetarian diet can feed the hungry, honor the animals, and save the planet. Lierre Keith believed in that plant-based diet and spent twenty years as a vegan. But in THE VEGETARIAN MYTH, she argues that we've been led astray--not by our longings for a just and sustainable world, but by our ignorance. The truth is that agriculture is a relentless assault against the planet, and more of the same won't save us. In service to annual grains, humans have devastated prairies and forests, driven countless species extinct, altered the climate, and destroyed the topsoil--the basis of life itself. Keith argues that if we are to save this planet, our food must be an act of profound and abiding repair: it must come from inside living communities, not be imposed across them. Part memoir, part nutritional primer, and part political manifesto, THE VEGETARIAN MYTH will challenge everything you thought you knew about food politics.

Vitamin D and H1N1 Swine Flu
So far, Swine flu, H1N1, has killed thirty-six children in U.S. and analysis of CDC data indicates Vitamin D deficient children at higher risk of death.
I’m not sure I can do this, watch our children die this winter from what may be a preventable disease, influenza, I’m not sure I’m strong enough. A few minutes ago, the CDC issued a report on Swine flu deaths among children; thirty-six U.S. children dead so far this season and the season hasn’t started yet. The dead children were much more likely to be Vitamin D deficient; but the CDC did not realize they discovered this. However, anyone familiar with the Vitamin D literature will recognize it.
The clue: almost two-thirds of our dead children had epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or other neurodevelopmental conditions like mental retardation. What do we know of these neurological conditions? All are associated with childhood Vitamin D deficiency; I won’t bore you with the references but anyone who has ever cared for these children know it; anyone who has studied these diseases on Medline knows it; anyone who has one of these kids know it; these kids just don’t go in the sun very much. If they do live at home and go outside, parents use sunblock because the child is so vulnerable, never robust. In addition to sunlight deprivation, many of these kids take anticonvulsant drugs, which lower Vitamin D levels.
One more thing, thirty-six dead kids so far this season and the season has not yet started. Over the last 4 years, around 100 American kids have died of the flu during flu season; this year the toll is 36 before the season has started.
