Roll-On Testosterone to Improve Men's Sex Drive Sold for $335 Million

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

A testosterone-laced underarm roll-on that can improve men's flagging sex drive has been developed in Australia and snapped up by top 10 pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, The Australian reported on Tuesday.

Melbourne company Acrux said its roll-on testosterone treatment Axiron, which is applied once a day, had been picked up by Eli Lilly, in what it claims is one of the biggest licensing deals ever by an Australian biotech firm.

The deal is worth more than $335 million to the Melbourne company, before potential royalties.

Eli Lilly has the right to market the product to 143 countries, including Australia, on the condition the U.S. Food and Drug Authority approves Axiron.

"I believe this is one of the largest, if not the largest, licensing deals undertaken by an Australian biotech company," Acrux chief executive Richard Treagus said.

According to Acrux, 39 percent of men over 50 suffer from testosterone deficiency. The symptoms include lethargy, weight loss, mood swings, depression and low libido.

The only over-the-counter treatment currently available is a gel that is applied over the man's upper body and takes 10 minutes to dry.

Acrux believes the global market for Axiron is worth more than $1.1 billion and growing at 20 percent a year.

I wouldn't say that. I'd say "cmere!" and rub a dab on her... 30 minutes later you'll have to fight her off (darn!) lol

Acrux reports Phase III trial results evaluating AXIRON for testosterone deficiency

Phase III trial results

The trial met its primary endpoint by demonstrating that after four months of treatment with AXIRON™, 84 percent of subjects achieved average blood levels of testosterone within the normal range, exceeding the requirement of 75 percent that was agreed upon by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

After only two weeks of treatment, it was found that 76 percent of subjects had average blood levels of testosterone within the normal range.

The average testosterone level for the responder group after 120 days treatment with AXIRON™ was 504ng/dl (the normal range being 300-1,050ng/dl). The average baseline testosterone level in subjects prior to treatment was 190ng/dl.

Four different dose levels of AXIRON™ were tested, and the trial demonstrated that the optimum dose for 75 percent of subjects was 60mg testosterone per day, equivalent to one single application of AXIRON™ to each armpit.

Once again, showing that most just don't understand that "within normal range" doesn't mean squat.

No Thank you not for me on one hand now you need pre approval to get a Testosterone script filled. Now you rub it under you arm. I get a rash from most under arm deodorant and find only a few agree with me.

Same here. I can't use any antiperspirants, only plain deodorants. The alcohol in them irritates my skin real bad.

If putting T in deodorant will make it absorb into you skin, what else is in there that's being absorbed? Are we killing ourselves to smell better?

I would imagine a requirement would be shaving ones armpits. Then there's probably the issue of the stuff going everywhere when one sweats.

Guys...

Its simply a ROLL ON APPLICATION... not a roll on underarm preparation.

You would roll on the T probably in the same location you put on gel NOW. It would just be in a form that came out of a roll-on bottle rather than a pump or a packet.

Cleaner and perhaps much easier to apply. Apparently Lilly thinks so, at $375M. Maybe there is a self limiting 'click' which tells you you have applied a certain dose. The 'wheel/ball' won't roll any more after a certain amount has been applied.

This ascertion that it is under arms is based upon the thread by rick055... and it was a joke!

Ok, that makes more sense... but, I think the original statement is a little misleading too, as it calls it an "underarm roll-on". :glare:

I suppose it would be better not to get it all over your hands.

OK got it still it's not for me Testosterone through the skin does not work good for me. I just wish more was being done to treat this like a pill to make ones Pituitay tell the testis to make T. Most men on TRT have problems with high Estradiol yet the Drug Co.'s don't feel it's worth looking into this problem and coming out with a fix for it.

Wrong...

As part of its continuing efforts to broaden its male sexual health portfolio, Eli Lilly has announced a worldwide licensing agreement with Acrux for Axiron, an underarm testosterone solution currently under FDA review. Lilly already has a strong foothold in this attractive market through the erectile dysfunction pill Cialis, and this deal signals its resolve in maintaining this position.

Under the terms of the licensing agreement, Eli Lilly will pay an upfront fee of $53m with an additional payment of $87m upon FDA approval. Depending on the candidate's commercial success, Acrux will receive up to $195m in potential milestones as well as royalty payments on potential future global sales. This agreement represents the largest ever licensing deal for an Australian biotech company.

After successful Phase III clinical trials assessing the solution's safety and efficacy, Acrux submitted Axiron to the FDA in January 2010. If approved, Axiron will become the first pharmaceutical product to be applied underarm.

I suppose it depends where under your arm they are talking about. If we're talking armpits....then I would wonder if the chemicals that make it absorb into the skin would also make any deodorant you use get absorbed as well. Hmmm
